Research context
PT-141 (also known as bremelanotide) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that acts as an agonist at melanocortin receptors. Pfaus and colleagues (2004) used a melanocortin receptor agonist of this class in rat studies to examine the involvement of melanocortin receptors in behaviour in that animal model. In laboratory work it is used as a reference agonist in melanocortin receptor binding and signalling assays. Published findings describe receptor pharmacology and experimental systems only and are not evidence of effects in people. Researchers should follow their own validated protocol for solvent choice, assay conditions and handling, and review the batch certificate of analysis before use.
