Why bacteriostatic water - Lyophilised peptides are supplied as dry powder and require a diluent before use in laboratory work. Plain sterile water contains no preservative, which means a vial is effectively single-use once opened. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol content in bacteriostatic water inhibits bacterial growth, allowing a vial to be accessed multiple times across a research programme without the diluent itself becoming a contamination source. This is why it is the standard diluent for reconstituting research peptides.
Handling and storage - Store at room temperature away from direct light. Wipe the septum with an alcohol swab before each access. Do not use if the solution appears cloudy, discoloured, or if the seal is compromised. Once a peptide has been reconstituted, the resulting solution should be refrigerated at 2-8 degrees C and has a materially shorter stable life than the lyophilised powder.
