Growth hormone (GH) is a single-chain protein hormone of about 191 amino acids, produced mainly in the pituitary. Baumann (1991) reviewed its isoforms and binding proteins. Waters and colleagues (2006) reviewed GH receptor signalling. In laboratory work, GH is used as a reference standard in receptor binding and cell-based signalling assays. Published findings describe protein biochemistry and experimental systems only and are not evidence of effects in people. Researchers should follow their own validated protocol for reconstitution, assay conditions and handling.
