Product: Epitalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, synthetic tetrapeptide)
Research context
Epitalon (also written epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It was developed in the research group of Khavinson, modelled on a pineal gland extract known as epithalamin. Khavinson and colleagues (2003) reported that the peptide induced telomerase activity and telomere elongation in cultured human somatic cells. A separate 2003 report described chromatin changes in cells from older donors. These results come from in vitro systems and are largely from one research group, so independent replication is relevant to how they are read. They are not evidence of effects in people. Researchers should follow their own validated protocol for solvent choice, assay conditions and handling.
